Winemaker combines samples from nature and ambient soundscapes on ‘Cold Water’ EP

Leeds-based producer Chris Milnes, aka Winemaker, has announced details of a forthcoming EP, Cold Water, which combines ambient samples from nature and everyday city life with dance beats.

For example, the five-track EP opens with the track Swimming, which samples an old recording of a busker playing a hang drum, samples of cutlery in a restaurant, and layered treated violins, while the track Three Dancers incorporates a phone recording of the wind in Yosemite National Park.

Milnes, who is also a university lecturer and member of the band Hollow Coves, debuted his Winemaker solo project in 2022, gaining support from BBC Introducing.

As he explains, he aims to “try and instill a peaceful perspective on these noises” in each piece.

According to a press release, ‘This EP showcases Chris Milnes’ innovative style and creativity in combining nature and electronic dance music. Fans of various genres will enjoy the unique blend of acoustic and electronic sounds found throughout the album.’

The launch of the EP will be accompanied by a new live-show production from Milnes, which is set to be debuted soon.

The Cold Water EP is set to be released on 5 May.
