2 Unlimited hit Amsterdam’s not so red light district… [May 1993]

Love them or hate them, there’s no doubt that 2 Unlimited, the Eurodance alter ego of producers Jean-Paul De Coster and Phil Wilde certainly made their impact on the charts in the early part of the 90s.

Not since original ‘man behind the scenes’ Frank Farian enjoyed massive success with Boney M and Milli Vanilli had a producer or producers employed unknown ‘faces’ for the band to such effect – while their role in the group’s productions were strictly vocal-based, Ray Slijngaard and Anita Dels WERE 2 Unlimited to a generation of fans.

Pop bible Smash Hits followed the pair to Amsterdam back in May 1993 – ‘Techno Through the Tulips!’ – for an innocent stroll through some of the city’s landmarks.

Gaze in awe a shop owned by Ray’s mother! Laugh at Ray’s inability to choose a lettuce he likes at Albert Cuyp Market. Chuckle at a mannequin cheekily ‘sticking up a middle finger’ in a local clothes shop…Ok, it’s certainly not ‘techno’. And it’s possibly the most innocent trip to Amsterdam a pair of good looking twentysomethings have ever been on. But what else were you expecting from Smash Hits?
