EXIT Festival has announced plans to return to Petrovaradin Fortress in Novi Sad, Serbia, in July 2027, following the election victory by the Student List movement.
The festival said that it will hold a ‘special edition’ of the festival next year, ahead of full-scale return in 2028.
The announcement came just days after the student-led movement toppled Aleksandar Vučić’s ruling party in the 25 October election.
“Last year, when a new student movement emerged to fight for freedom and justice, we simply had to stand with them and uphold the very values EXIT was built on, even if it meant sacrificing everything we had spent our lives building,” commented Dušan Kovačević, founder and CEO of EXIT Festival.
“Now, thanks to the courage and perseverance of Serbia’s students, freedom has returned to our country. And after taking EXIT’s spirit around the world, we are finally coming home.”
Founded in Novi Sad in 2000 as a student movement campaigning for democracy and peace, EXIT developed into one of Europe’s major music festivals. It moved to Petrovaradin Fortress in 2001 and has since attracted around 200,000 visitors across four days, with previous performers including The Prodigy, Kraftwerk, Arctic Monkeys, Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, Carl Cox and Charlotte de Witte.
EXIT cancelled its 2026 edition in Serbia, saying that it faced political, security and financial pressure, including threats and the detention of the brother of founder and CEO Dušan Kovačević in May. The announcement of its return follows a symbolic gathering at Petrovaradin Fortress in July, when EXIT and local students displayed banners reading ‘Students Are Winning’ and ‘Next Year at the Fortress’.
During its year away from Serbia, EXIT organised eight events across six countries, including Montenegro, Croatia, Malta and Spain, as well as at the Great Pyramids of Giza in Egypt.
