The Schwarzman Centre for the Humanities at the University of Oxford has announced details of Steve Reich: Phase | Pattern | Pulse, an immersive spatial audio experience celebrating the American composer’s 90th birthday.
Running from 25 September to 11 October, the programme will bring together spatial audio designers Loss><Gain and percussion ensemble Colin Currie Group for a series of performances, centred on Reich’s Music for 18 Musicians, Drumming, and a programme combining Sextet, Six Marimbas and Double Sextet.
The production is being presented in the Schwarzman Centre’s Black Box, which previously hosted Sigur Rós’ ÁRA.
Loss><Gain has previously worked with artists including Max Richter, Jon Hopkins, Anna Meredith, Public Service Broadcasting and Hannah Peel on spatial sound installations.
Steve Reich’s music has influenced composers and musicians across several decades, particularly in the electronic music arena – The Orb‘s Little Fluffy Clouds was built around a riff from Electric Counterpoint – Fast (Movement 3); Kerri Chandler sampled Six Pianos on his track of the same name; and Ken Ishii, Howie B and Coldcut were among the artists to remix Reich’s work on 1999’s Reich Remixed.
The Oxford programme forms part of Steve Reich in Focus, a wider series marking the composer’s 90th birthday on 3 October.
Following its Oxford run, Phase | Pattern | Pulse will be presented at The Glasshouse International Centre for Music in Gateshead as part of its Steve Reich at 90 festival.
