Portsmouth-based producer GUMR has released the Acid Freq EP on Freaky Nation Records, featuring both the title track alongside remixes from Acid Cats and Chip Jacks.
Produced in Steve Mac‘s (Rhythm Masters) studio, the release was created using a range of analogue equipment, including a Roland TB-303, Eventide reverbs and a Studer tape machine.
“This release was inspired by blending the new deep tech sound with that classic wiggle and Superfreq energy,” GUMR explains. “I wanted to capture a raw, analog feel that you can only get from real machines. Working at Steve’s studio allowed us to push the sound further than I ever could on a laptop.”
As the producer notes, the aim was to merge the energy of classic underground, analog club music with the production style of today’s deep tech scene.
As for the remixes – Acid Cats delivers a darker, electro-influenced interpretation, while Chip Jacks serves up a breakbeat-driven version influenced by artists such as Bohdi, Cortese and Villager.
“Using the 303 and running the mix through classic analog gear gave the track its soul,” GUMR adds. “The remixes add even more depth – Acid Cats bring that spooky vibe, while Chip Jacks really nailed the breakbeat sound that is so current right now.”
