Manchester label Sprechen marks tenth anniversary with new compilation

To mark its tenth anniversary, Manchester-based independent label Sprechen has announced the release of Ein Null, a compilation that traces the label’s journey since its foundation in 2015.

Released on 19 September, the compilation features artists such as A Certain Ratio, Low Pulse, Léna C, Lindstrøm, The Thief of Time & Lady Lady, PBR Streetgang and more.

The story of Sprechen begins in the bedroom of Chris Massey, who started the label in Manchester in 2015, a year that also saw the Golden Lion open its doors in Todmorden. Around that same time, Supernature Disco was beginning to host its parties, establishing a cultural backdrop that would intertwine with Sprechen’s growth.

‘What has followed over the next decade, is a wild ride of amazing people, memorable (though fuzzy!) parties, creativity, art, expression, performance and at the centre of it all of course, the music,’ as a press release put it.

‘Sprechen has never been one style or sound. A reflection of varied musical tastes without any limitations of style or genres, just a passion to share good music.’

In turn, the compilation Ein Null reflects the label’s refusal to devote itself to a particular style.

The anniversary was also marked with two events, the first of which took place on 30 August at the Cloudwater Tap Room in Manchester, featuring Chris Massey, Muddy Feet, Elliott Lion of Editors, Flash Atkins with Milkes Hollway, Paul Smith, and Toni Key, while the second, at BRUK in Stockport on 20 September, featured Massey, Léna C, Supernature, Psychederek, and Old Pal.
