This dance festival lineup from 20 years ago is insanely good… [May 1997]

Where were you on May 24th, 1997?

If you were anywhere near the Brighton, UK area, chances are you were at Essential Festival, a three day session on the south coast, that boasted one of the strongest dance lineups we’ve ever seen.

What we love about this lineup isn’t the headline acts – although having Future Sound of London (check out a clip of their set below), Chemical Brothers, The Orb and LTJ Bukem on at the same time is pretty damn impressive – it’s the fact that some of the biggest names in house, drum and bass and techno make up the small print.

Derrick Carter, Dave Clarke, Grooverider, The Advent and Planetary Assault System are just some of the names that entertained partygoers during the day. For £25, it’s not bad value either…

Plus if you scroll right to the bottom, you see arguably one of the biggest names in dance music over the last 20 years, buried away and spelled incorrectly … Mr ‘Fat Boy Slim’…
