Happy Mondays have announced plans to release what has been described as a ‘pill edition’ of their 1990 album Pills ’n’ Thrills and Bellyaches, which is set to land on London Records this August.
The release, which is limited to 200 units across four colour variants, reimagines the album through.. ahem.. ‘pharmaceutical’ style packaging, as well as also featuring a ‘pill organiser’, a rave whistle inspired by Manchester’s GMEX venue, acid blotter-style artwork, a purity testing kit and a card to download the album.
As well as the pill edition, London Records is re-releasing the album across a range of formats, including a five-LP vinyl box set, four-CD and two-CD editions, a standard LP, coloured vinyl variants, a picture disc and a cassette. All audio has been remastered from the original Factory Records master tapes.
The five-LP edition combines the original album with the Hallelujah and Madchester Rave On EPs, the live Baby Big Head Bootleg Album recorded at Elland Road in 1991, and a collection of classic and newly commissioned remixes. It also features a 60-page book featuring unpublished material relating to the album’s creation and artwork.
Released in November 1990, Pills ’n’ Thrills and Bellyaches featured the singles Step On, Kinky Afro and Loose Fit, and saw the group team up with producers Steve Osborne and Paul Oakenfold.
