#MyRecordBag – Leo Janeiro’s top Brazilian classics

A resident at clubs including Warung in Santa Catarina and São Paulo’s D- Edge, DJ and producer Leo Janeiro is also the A&R man for Get Physical Music’s Latin America-focused sub-label, Cocada Music.

Renowned for blending Latin beats with house music and soulful synth-led grooves, Janeiro’s latest EP, Marambaia/Uncle Silva is released on the label on 24 February.

Ahead of that release, 909originals asked the Rio-native for a playlist of his top Brazilian classics – and he’s served up an impressive mix of funk, rap, MPB, soul and psychedelic jazz. Whether you’re a longtime lover of Brazilian beats (like we are), or are a newcomer to the sounds of South America, it’s worth a listen.

Azymuth – Jazz Carnival (Milestone Records – 1979)

This might be one of my favourite records. Jazz Carnival is the perfect mix of Brazil and all its musical diversity. The Azymuth trio, originally from Rio de Janeiro, is probably one of the greatest musical heritages that we have, their music has travelled decades and is still going!

[Talvez um dos meus discos favoritos, Jazz Carnival é a mistura perfeita do Brazil e sua diversidade musical, o trio Azymuth original do Rio de Janeiro é talvez um dos grandes patrimônios que temos na musica, suas musicas atravessam décadas e continuam presentes!]

Eumir Deodato – Super Strut (Epic Records – 1973)

Maestro Deodato is one of the greatest names in live and recorded music. He is responsible for numerous hits in disco, R&B and Latin – he produced Kool & The Gang’s Celebration. Super Strut is bossa nova, disco and rock. Pay attention to the percussive part of the song. Absolutely one of the greatest pieces of music of all time.

Robson Jorge & Lincoln Olivetti – Aleluia (Som Livre -1982)

A rare gem – that’s how we can classify the duo Robson Jorge & Lincoln Olivetti. Having released only one record, their union made something almost impossible, a perfect album, with rich brass and bass compositions, creating a sound pattern way ahead of its time. It’s considered one of the best instrumental albums of all time.

[Uma joia rara, assim podemos classificar a dupla Robson Jorge & Lincoln Olivetti, tendo lançado um único disco, a união dos dois fez quase algo impossível, um álbum perfeito, arranjos ricos em metais e baixos e criando um padrão sonoro muito a frente da época, considerado um dos melhores discos de musica instrumental de todos os tempos.]

Gilberto Gil – Palco (Warner Music – 1981)

Gilberto Gil is one of the greatest names in Brazilian musical culture. From Bahia, he showed the world his Afro-Brazilian influences and wrote songs that go through generations, making him one of the most loved artists. On this track, Palco, we can feel this musical richness, a mixture of instruments and compositional styles. This song was recorded previously by the group A Cor do Som and then re-recorded by Gil – amazingly the press weren’t that favourable, but soon time proved it to be one of the most important of songs.

[Gilberto Gil, um dos maiores nomes da cultura musical brasileira, vindo da Bahia, mostrou a mundo as suas influencias afro-brasileiras e fez musicas que passam por gerações, se tornando um dos artistas mais queridos . Nesta faixa “Palco” podemos sentir o quanto essa riqueza musical faz parte, uma misturas de instrumentos e arranjos, porem esta musica foi gravada antes pelo grupo A Cor do Som e depois regravada por Gil, incrivelmente a imprensa não fez boas criticas, ma so tempo provou ser uma das musicas mais importantes de todos os tempos.]

Tim Maia – Vitoria Regia Estou Contigo e Não Abro (Tim Maia Disco Club – 1978)

Tim Maia is a very well known singer amongst record collectors around the world – he was, for sure, the ‘Rei dos Bailes’ (King of the Party). His music was always a hit because of the mixture he created of funk, soul and R&B. Vitoria Regia Estou Contigo e Não Abro is a beautiful homage to the band that followed the artist through out almost all of his trajectory. A rich composition and an incredible instrumental track for any dance floor.

[Tim Maia, talvez o cantor brasileiro mais conhecido por muitos colecionadores de disco pelo mundo, ele com certeza absoluta foi o “Rei dos Bailes” – grandes festas dentro dos subúrbios do Rio e Janeiro. Suas musicas sempre foram sucessos por conta da mistura do Funky, Soul e R&B. “Vitoria Regia Estou Contigo e Não Sbro” é uma bela homenagem a banda que acompanhou o artista durante quase toda sua trajetória, riqueza de arranjos e incrível facilidade de ser uma excelente faixa instrumental para qualquer pista de dança.]

Marcos Valle – Bicicleta (Som Livre – 1984)

One of our geniuses – part of the Bossa Nova generation – Marcos is considered one of the greatest Brazilian artists, recognised in all corners of the world. In the Seventies he got closer to Disco and R&B and made records that are classics today, such as Estrelar and Bicicleta, which were Brazilian boogie hits, and are great finds still today!

[Um dos nossos gênios, fez parte da geração bossa nova, Marcos é considerado talvez um dos maiores artistas brasileiros reconhecidos pelos 4 cantos do mundo. No década de 70 se aproximou da disco e r&b e fez discos que são clássicos como “Estrelar’ e “Bicicleta” que foram sucessos do boogie brasileiro, sendo grandes descobertas ate hoje!]

Banda Black Rio – Mr Funky Samba (Warner Music – 1977)

Black Rio is probably the most important Brazilian band of the Seventies – the perfect fusion between soul, samba funk, jazz and disco. They were responsible for one of the most important albums of all time, Maria Fumaça, which has a strong influence on new artists till this day, making it a musical reference point. Mr Funk Samba is perfect in many aspects – it’s the best of our essence, swing made in Brazil.

[Black Rio é talvez a banda mais importante da década de 70, fusão perfeita entre soul, samba funk, jazz, disco. Foram responsáveis por um dos discos mais importantes de todos os tempo – Maria Fumaça tem uma forte influência sobre novos artistas se tornando um referencia sonora. “Mr Funk Samba” é perfeita sobre vários aspectos, é o melhor da nossa sua essência num so lugar, swing ‘made in Brazil’.]

Black Juniors – Mas Que Linda Estas (Som Livre – 1984)

One of the first rap hits in Brazil in the Eighties. With the explosion of breakdance on Brazilian soil, Black Juniors surged forward with an album dedicated to breakdance and graffiti culture. Mas Que Linda Estas is my childhood hit, I danced a lot to it at home. It is always with me, a real classic!

[Um dos primeiros sucessos do rap brasil da década de 80, com a explosão do break dance em terras brazucas, o Black Juniors aparece com um disco dedicado a cultura do break e grafite, “Mas Que Linda Estas” é o hit da minha infância, eu dancei muito em casa. Disco que ate hoje me acompanha, um verdadeira clássico!]

Almir Ricardi – Festa Funk (RGE – 1984)

One of the Brazilian boogie gems, Festa Funk rocked generations, being a massive hit but with a sensational groove, with a simple and easy chorus. Almir had the producers Lincoln Olivetti and Robson Jorge, the Midas of music production, working with him at the time.

Nu Azeite – Bate Macumba (Cocada Music -2022)

Perhaps one of the best new acts that we’ve had in the past years, Nu Aziete is a duo from Rio composed of the musician Fabio Santanna and the DJ Bernardo Campos. They demonstrate all their musical background in two incredible albums. Bate Macumba is a summary of percussive elements mixed with samba percussion, electronica and jazz – the current Brazilian essence in its best form.
