Birmingham-based artist Subb-an has announced the release of Lotus Rising, an album that explores his South Asian heritage, and features live instrumentation and a more introspective approach to production.
The 11-track album, which has been five years in development, was released through Phonica Records Special Editions on 30 October, and marks a shift away from Subb-an’s house and techno output towards more organic elements, reflecting a period of transition and reconnection for the artist.
The album features contributions from several musicians and vocalists, including London-based Indian sitar player Akash Parekar, vocalist and sound artist Kate Fleur Young, vocalist Anushree Datar, bassist Luke Weaver and Maribou State drummer Jonny Cade.
The image of the lotus provides the framework for the album, representing growth and transformation, with Subb-an exploring different sides of his production as the album develops.
Subb-an has previously released on labels such as One Records, Spectral Sound and Crosstown Rebels, as well as his personal Sub Series imprint, and worked with artists such as Mathew Jonson, Seth Troxler, Enzo Siraguza and Tom Trago, among others.
Subb-an will be performing a live set with Akash Parekar, Luke Weaver and Kate Fleur Young at Phonica in Soho on 5 November, to launch the album. Adam Shelton is also set to appear. Elsewhere, Subb-an recently performed at Amsterdam Dance Event, on a double-header at Kwartier Amsterdam alongside Karina Schneider.
