Richie Hawtin and Irish contemporary artist John Gerrard are set to host a 24-hour experience at FVTVR in Paris during Art Basel Paris, running from noon on Saturday 24 October to noon the following day.
The programme will bring together contemporary art, electronic music and club culture, with Gerrard’s digital installations presented alongside performances and DJ sets curated by Hawtin. The programme forms part of the Reference Festival.
The first segment, running from noon to midnight on Saturday, will centre on Gerrard’s infin.1.iridescent.stream, a digital installation featuring a D’Albertis python whose body traces a figure of eight every hour, forming an ouroboros. The simulation runs across a full solar year, with its colours shifting between night and day.
The installation will feature an original composition by Hawtin‘s Plastikman alias, continuously recomposed through Bronze.ai so that the sound and visuals change over time. The programme will open with a conversation between Hawtin and Gerrard, moderated by Marc Spiegler.
Gerrard’s SPIRITS project will also form part of the programme. The work began with 96 plastic shoes and sandals collected from beaches across the Pacific, Indian Ocean, Mediterranean and Atlantic. The objects were photographed and digitally reconstructed to become ‘shifting sculptural forms, rippling with oil-slick reflections and currents’.
Originally commissioned by the Art + Technology Lab at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the work unfolds over a year according to the solstices and equinoxes. At FVTVR, SPIRITS will be presented as an installation and live performance with Anastasia Giovani.
At midnight, the programme will move into a MINUS+ night curated by Hawtin, featuring sets from Matador, Courtesy, Kristin Velvet and Reece Pritchard, as well as Hawtin himself.
The event will take place at FVTVR, 34 Quai d’Austerlitz, Paris, with free entry for the exhibition and conversation from noon to midnight. The MINUS+ / SPIRITS programme runs from midnight to noon on 25 October, with tickets available for the overnight programme. More information is available here.
