Soma Records revisits Surgeon’s ‘Muggerscum Out’ for latest 35th anniversary release

Soma Records is continuing its 35th anniversary celebrations with a re-release of techno producer Surgeon’s 1996 EP Muggerscum Out.

The re-release, SOMA35.2, features four reworks of tracks from the original EP by Slam, Lewis Fautzi, Nørbak and Justyn Nell, including three reinterpretations of the track Coaster, as well as a reworking of Brownian Motion.

According to Soma Records, Muggerscum Out captured Surgeon ‘at his most uncompromising. Its stripped-back intensity, industrial edge and hypnotic power would go on to become hallmarks of Birmingham techno, influencing countless artists while cementing Soma’s reputation as a home for fearless electronic music.’

SOMA35.2 is part of a wider series marking 35 years of Soma Records, which revisits releases from the label’s catalogue and invites contemporary producers to reinterpret and remix the tracks therein.

“It’s a testament to the passion that we have for the label,” Soma co-founder Stuart McMillan said of the series. “I think that being here after all that time, and for Soma to still be so relevant, is probably the most important thing, and an amazing achievement.”

SOMA35.2 is now available digitally, with the vinyl release following on 24 August. Check it out here.
