Berlin producer Parra for Cuva has released his sixth studio album, Nacar, which has been described as his ‘most introspective work to date’.
Parra for Cuva, aka Nico Demuth, collaborated with artists such as Nathan Ball, orbit, CRi, Vraell, Cile, PALLADIAN, Aukai and Vines on the 12-track album, which draws on the concept of transformation – ‘how something fragile and raw slowly evolves into something luminous and layered’.
The album takes its title, Nacar, from the Spanish word for ‘mother-of-pearl’, and was preceded by three singles – Selva, Selva, featuring traditional Latin vocals from Maria Kaxinawá, Towards Amber and Juri.
According to the artist, the album was developed while moving between countries and performances, with sessions taking place in temporary studios set up in locations across Mexico, Italy, Japan, Costa Rica, Australia and the United States.
The result is an album inspired by the various environments he encountered during that period – as an example, field recordings from Costa Rica have been incorporated directly into the music.
Parra for Cuva first gained prominence with his 2013 single Wicked Games, featuring Anna Naklab. Since then, he has released several albums, including Majouré, Darwîś, Paspatou, Juno and Mimose, and has collaborated with artists including ODESZA, Ólafur Arnalds and Monolink.
The release of Nacar coincides with the announcement of a European tour, which commenced in Berlin on 16 May and takes in dates in Amsterdam, Paris, London and Warsaw, among other cities, while a North American leg follows in November with shows in cities including San Francisco, Chicago, Brooklyn, Toronto and Montreal.
