House legend Kenny Dope has teamed up with Róisín Murphy on a cover of Talking Heads’ Born Under Punches (The Heat Goes On), the first single from a forthcoming project celebrating the new wave group’s legacy.
Other artists to feature on the compilation, titled Naive Melodies, will include Aja Monet, Liv.e, Bilal, Georgia Anne Muldrow, Rosie Lowe, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, Theo Croker & Theophilus London, Pachyman, Vicky Farewell, W.I.T.C.H. Wu-Lu and more.
Curated by Drew McFadden, who previously oversaw a compilation celebrating the music of David Bowie, Naive Melodies will see each artists interpret the band’s catalogue through a contemporary perspective.
“This project is a chance to reimagine Talking Heads’ legacy through the lens of the very innovations that helped shape it, bringing those influences to the forefront through the voices of today’s most forward-thinking artists,” McFadden commented.
Or, as a press release to mark the release of Born Under Punches (The Heat Goes On) put it, this is not just a tribute album, it’s a ‘recontextualisation’ of Talking Heads’ music.
‘These songs are not just sonic experiments, but acts of cartography,’ it added. ‘Each interpretation is rooted in place, with sounds woven back to points of origin. They were sonic world travellers — and Naive Melodies stamps our passports, using reinterpretation as a mode of exploration, moving beyond borders and deep into continents. ‘
Born Under Punches (The Heat Goes On) is now available, with Naive Melodies scheduled for release on 29 October through BBE Music.
