Polish electronic duo Catz ’n Dogz have released their eighth album, Finally, with the pair marking more than 20 years of making music together.
The album, which is out now on the Pets Recordings label, features collaborations with Gerd Janson, MYD, Miller Blue, Luisa Wilson, Ajii, and Stuzzi, and marks a change in the duo’s approach to production, with greater emphasis on songwriting and recording with musicians.
“Twenty years ago, it was all about proving ourselves, establishing our sound and non-stop adrenaline,” they explain. “You’re so focused on the momentum. Now, we feel a lot more freedom to be vulnerable and to focus on the community aspect of our music. We don’t feel the pressure to chase trends anymore.”
The duo say the project followed a period in which they had become focused on social media and algorithms. As they put it, “last year, we got stuck. We were overthinking our music, obsessing over social media and chasing trends.”
They subsequently returned their attention to music, collaboration and relationships, a switch of mindset that influenced tracks such as One Day, Impermanent and Eyes Closed on the new album.
Some of the album’s recordings came from sessions in New York, where a planned one-week visit was extended after a snowstorm disrupted travel, giving the duo more time to work with Brooklyn singer-songwriter Ajii and Luisa Wilson on the track We’re Gonna Be Alright.
Other collaborations developed through existing relationships. Gerd Janson contributed to Can’t Get Enough, while MYD worked with the duo in Madrid after they met at Defected Croatia.
The project extends beyond the music itself – for the video for Dance For You, Catz ’n Dogz worked with Dancing Międzypokoleniowy, a Polish initiative that brings people aged 60 and over together through dance and artistic projects.
“We didn’t want to do something cliché,” they explain. “They’re real people and they are doing amazing parties for seniors bringing them joy. At a time when many older people are experiencing greater loneliness and fewer opportunities for social connection, we wanted to use this upbeat song to shine a light on friendship, love and human connection at every stage of life.”
As a press release puts it, Finally is ‘an album for driving without a destination. For watching the sun go down. For remembering somebody you haven’t thought about in years.’
“It is a celebration, but also an acknowledgement, of where we have been, the people we have met along the way, and the possibility that the best moments might still be ahead.” the duo explain.
