Discussions about Irish nightlife, especially nightclubs, are often led by individuals who do not actively engage with these venues. Sadly, this disconnect has influenced decision-making in the industry.
For example, in 2007/08, Dr. Gordon Holmes, head of an advisory group appointed by Fianna Fáil, once remarked that he had no personal experience inside a nightclub. Despite this, that didn’t stop he and his six-man group from recommending a number of senseless changes to nightclub-related licensing laws and conditions.
These were changes that caused irreparable damage to the industry.
Combined with the incoming financial downturn that started in late 2008, the industry entered a swift free fall. That year, Ireland had 328 nightclubs, today the figure is at approximately 90.
The public’s desire to dance at night has certainly not gone away, and never will, but there are numerous challenges that exist for nightclubs and their ability to remain viable.
With this in mind, an Irish Nightclub Survey has been launched to measure your experience of nightclubs in Ireland. This survey is not for those who continually try to drag down nightlife, paint it in a negative light, and won’t be happy until we have nowhere to socialise at night.
This survey is for USERS of nightlife, users of dance venues, users of nightclubs across Ireland. This survey should be used to highlight challenges and opportunities, and to gauge the type of nightclub experience that you want to have (and what it might take to achieve that).
This survey is conducted anonymously, so no personal information will be collected or shared. The results will be crucial in the next stages of our communication with government and opposition parties, and will help to demonstrate a clear overview of what this industry is about and where it needs to go.
