#MyRecordBag – Orlando Voorn’s all time electro classics

Over his three-decade career, Orlando Voorn has blended elements of techno, soul, funk, drum’n’bass, hip hop, ambient, and electro to create his signature sound, both under his own name and various aliases such as Frequency, Night Tripper, Fix and The Stalker.

The Dutch artist has long sought to bridge the gap between European and Detroit techno, and his latest release, alongside late Motor City artist Amp Fiddler is a case in point. Back To Basic, on the new Dutch-Portuguese label Universo Positivo, is released on 31 May, backed by Wade Teo and Soul Clap remixes. You can pre-order it here.

Also keep an eye out for Orlando’s forthcoming release on p-ertönen, the Slasher EP, which is due out on 7 June. More information on that can be found here.

For this week’s #MyRecordBag feature, Orlando Voorn delves into his vaults to uncover his all-time electro cuts – plenty of classics here to get your teeth into. Over to you, Orlando…

Twilight 22 – Electric Kingdom

“Arabic vibes on this track, Electric Kingdom. It was also partly inspired by Soulsonic Force. This was huge in the club.”

Afrika Bambaataa & The Soulsonic Force – Looking For The Perfect Beat

“Absolute beast of a record that never lost its power – this is in my top 10 all-time electro tracks.”

Afrika Bambaataa & The Soulsonic Force – Planet Rock

Planet Rock is the result that came after Kraftwerk did their thing, and this production had more impact. The beats and dark melodies with the fierce vocals. A very important record.”

Cybotron – Clear

“Another stone-cold classic, I used to have several copies of this. Later, I was working with Juan Atkins, this was in the early nineties, when we made the classic Game One in my home studio back then in Holland. We also did a double album on Outer as Frequency vs Atkins.”

Johnzon Crew – Packjam

“This one is another cold one, super moody and dope production. Space music at its finest!”

Hashim – Al-Naafiysh (The Soul)

“A couple of copies were trashed on this one! Its its its tiiimmmmmmmmmeeeeee! Super classic.”

Kraftwerk – Tour De France

“The undeniable Kraftwerk, who laid the foundation for electro music.”

Planet Patrol – Play At Your Own Risk

“Monster record! These were the genius minds that made records differently, with no fear. Both vocal and instrumental versions are king.”

Man Parrish – Boogie Down Bronx

“Man Parrish has to be in this one for me. Incredible funky record and still has the strength today. A truly sophisticated production.”

Ice T – Reckless

“Rugged and raw Ice T rapping over electro beats! Body poppin’ times back then.”

Thanks to Orlando for his selections. Orlando Voorn & Amp Fiddler’s Back to Basic can be pre-ordered here.
