#MyRecordBag – House legend Todd Terry reveals his all-time ‘go-to’ tracks

When it comes to house music, Todd Terry needs no introduction – the Brooklyn native helped soundtrack the acid house movement with tracks such as Weekend and Can You Party, and would go on to be one of dance’s most celebrated producers and remixers in the three decades or so since.

He has started 2023 with a bang, with new singles Fly Like An Eagle and I Give You Love (featuring Janika Tenn & Lee Wilson) on his InHouse imprint, Make You Happy (alongside Mark Knight and James Hurr) on Toolroom, and a recent Steve Mac edit of his classic Keep On Jumpin‘ on Freeze Records.

We have an interview with Terry coming up in the coming weeks, but in the meantime, for our latest #MyRecordBag feature, we asked the house legend to select his all-time go-to tracks – the essential tunes that can raise the roof at any party, no questions asked.

As he tells us, I don’t play these all the time but I play them more than most, my go to tracks, my inspiration. If I still lugged around vinyl, these would be in the bag always.”

Black Riot – A Day In The Life

“One of my productions under one of my many aliases from the late 1980’s. A track that I never get tired of playing.”

Marshall Jefferson – Move Your Body

“The originator, everything comes from this track. The 4/4 kick, the open hi hat, the piano, the vocal – ‘gotta have house music’. It’s perfect.”

Crystal Waters – Gypsy Woman (She’s Homeless)

“From the opening organ riff to the ‘La da dee, la da da,’ this never misses.”

Inner City – Good Life

“Another one of those tracks that everyone sings along to – you can drop this anywhere in a set.”

Adonis – No Way Back

“The bass line, the TR drums, claps and cowbell – that’s it.”

Jungle Brothers – I’ll House You

“This is a party track, a house party every time! The genesis of hip house… oh yeah, and I produced it. Many remixes have been done, but I still play the original.”

Afrika Bambaataa & Soulsonic Force – Planet Rock

“Electronic dance music – this is it.”

Todd Terry – Keep On Jumping featuring Martha Wash & Jocelyn Brown

“A great track by the great Patrick Adams. I recorded a version in 1997 with two of my favourite vocalists, Martha and Jocelyn. I have the beats and acapellas and make a new mix of this every night I play it.”

James Brown – Sex Machine

“I don’t play this often, but it’s a guide to how I put my sets together – figure it out, ha!”

Nuyorican Soul with Jocelyn Brown – It’s Alright, I Feel It

“A masterpiece, Kenny Dope and Louie Vega at their peak powers with that Jocelyn vocal. Listen and learn.”

Everything But The Girl – Missing (Todd Terry Remix)

“I have to play this, if not, people throw drinks at me… true story.”
