Primavera Sound renews alliance with UN SDG campaign, aims to achieve a ‘greener’ festival
Primavera Sound, which takes place next month in Barcelona, has aligned itself with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, and adopted measures to position itself as an even ‘greener’ festival.
Among the measures being implemented are a stage powered entirely by renewable energy, an agreement with TRAM Barcelona (which will see the T4 tram running for the duration of the event), an extension of an existing bicycle parking scheme and measures to offset the festival’s carbon footprint.
The festival is also steadfast in its commitment to parity, with gender-balanced line-ups in its Latin American and Los Angeles editions.

“With the aim of making sure that the footprint left by the festival in the Parc del Fòrum and in the whole of Barcelona is solely and exclusively musical, Primavera Sound continues to work to promote an event that is more and more responsible with its environment in line with the Sustainable Development Goals,” the organisers said in a statement.
Primavera Sound’s 2019 edition achieved a ‘highly recommended’ certification in the A Greener Festival awards, and it is seeking to build on that achievement with its forthcoming 20th anniversary edition.
“For its part, Primavera Sound has been developing actions for years that are framed, first independently and since 2019 as official allies of the campaign, within these goals that range from gender equality to education, respect for the environment and sustainable consumption and production,” the organisers added.
Other measures to be implemented include a ‘reusable cup’ campaign, which in the 2019 edition allowed for the recovery of more than three tonnes of cups.
In 2022, all single-use plastic containers will be eliminated (including PET water bottles) and the use of compostable tableware will be imposed in the restaurant areas, which will also offer a wide range of vegan and proximity cuisine, again to lessen the environmental impact.
