Ben Böhmer, Yves Tumor, Artbat among biggest ‘winners’ on Spotify since start of pandemic

Music research and analytics platform Viberate has undertaken a study to determine which artists were the biggest winners on Spotify since the start of the pandemic, across the six most listened-to genres.

The artists were selected according to their follower growth over the 12 month period between April 2020 and April 2021, a solid listener-to-follower ratio, and over 100.000 monthly listeners.

In the ‘Electronic’ category, the most successful artist on Spotify was German house producer Ben Böhmer, who achieved a 143% increase in followers during the period, boosted by his releases Cappadocia and Moments, which gained more than 18 million streams. In September, the Göttingen native played a special livestream set for Cercle, from a hot air balloon above Turkey.

Also scoring highly, according to the report, were US-based artists Yves Tumor (who released album Heaven to a Tortured Mind last Spring) and INZO, along with Ukraine’s Artbat and Unknown Brain, from the UK.

Viberate’s report also determined that Spotify playlists and TikTok were hugely influential during the lockdown period, with each top-performing artist’s tracks either going viral on TikTok at some point or being included in an influential playlist.

The report also showed that Pop was the most popular genre on Spotify during lockdown, followed by Hip Hop, Latin, Rock, R&B, and Electronic.
