As one half of M.A.N.D.Y., German producer Philipp Jung played a key role in the emergence of the melodic house movement of the 2000s, and as the co-founder of both Get Physical Music and Kindisch, his musical exploration has veered from dark, driving sounds to sunny, uplifting vibes.
His latest release is Rewind Forward Vol. 1, an 11-track compilation set for release on Get Physical on 27 March, which features both Jung’s own compositions (with M.A.N.D.Y.), his remix work, and tracks by artists including Ryan Murgatroyd, Class B Band, and Digitaline. Combining both past and present, the compilation can be pre-ordered here.
For this week’s #MyRecordBag, Philipp Jung serves up a 25-year retrospective of Get Physical, featuring a “selection of known and unknown songs” from the label’s history.
M.A.N.D.Y. – Put Put Put (John Tejada Rmx)
“It was our first release on the label. We pressed 250 white labels and ran from distribution to distribution, but no one wanted to do it until DJ T. found us Intergroove from Frankfurt. It took us a lot of money and years, but once we got the distribution covered, it took off quite nicely.”
Chelonis R. Jones – I Don’t Know
“Not to romanticise the past too much, but when we brought Chelonis on board, it was simply about the music and the connection. Chelonis was a colleague, an incredibly talented artist, and someone we toured the world with. At the time, there was less focus on categorising people, and for us, it was always rooted in mutual respect and admiration. I loved this artist so much. Chelonis was so talented on so many levels. It feels like the right time for a re-release.”
DJ T. – Starlit
“Thomas had a huge contribution to our defining sound. It was a new way of presenting disco. Still love those EPs and still play them out.”
Raz Ohara – Kisses
“Lots of great projects. People didn’t quite get it in the beginning, but we always loved all kinds of music. Raz is a rare talent, and he has proved himself.”
Riton / Howdi – Closer
“One of the very early works of Riton. Not many people knew him at the time – maybe as the boyfriend of Heidi. Very talented and funny.”
Claude VonStroke – Chimps
“Love this early work from Barclay [Crenshaw]. At the time, it was super fresh and new. Great drums too.”
Fuckpony – Ride the Pony
“Jay Haze (RIP) and Samin. They put out some proper minimal groovers. I really loved playing their records. We released quite a bunch of music in that style, influenced by these two.”
Jesse Rose – Didn’t I (Audion Remix)
“More on the techno side. Beautiful work from both artists. Matthew [Dear] is one of my favourites, and I think, up until now, a little underrated as an artist.”
Sebo K & Metro – Transit (King Britt Scuba Mix)
“This was music from my Watergate family – Uli, the owner, and Sebo K. It’s not really something you would play out, but I love to play it at home in full length.”
Booka Shade – Vertigo (Henrik Schwarz Remix)
“Such intense dub beauty. I’ve listened to this a thousand times, and it always gets to me. A groove like this doesn’t let you go from start to finish.”
