French electronic duo Air will release a special new edition of their soundtrack to Sofia Coppola’s debut film The Virgin Suicides on 26 September, to mark its 25th anniversary.
For the new edition, the band commissioned original mixer Stéphane ‘Alf’ Briat to create a new analog mix from the master tapes. The reissue will be available on streaming platforms, vinyl, and a 2-CD/Blu-Ray package; the latter of which will include an analog mix, a Dolby Atmos spatial audio Blu-Ray, and a selection of previously unreleased rarities and demos.
In 2001, the soundtrack won a Victoire de la Musique award and was nominated the same year for a Brit Award for Best Film Soundtrack. In 2014, NME ranked the album 11th in its list of greatest soundtracks, while in 2019 Pitchfork placed it fourth among the 50 best soundtracks of all time.
The album’s lead single, Playground Love, was performed by Air alongside Thomas Mars of Phoenix at the closing ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Air are currently in the midst of their Moon Safari anniversary tour, with recent highlights including a collaboration with Charli XCX at Paris’ We Love Green festival and a concert at the Herodes Atticus Theatre, on the Acropolis in Athens. Next week will see them perform at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles alongside the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, to be followed by a tour across North America.
The Virgin Suicides Redux will be available digitally, on vinyl, and in expanded CD/Blu-Ray formats on 26 September. You can pre-order it here.
