Danny Rampling issues statement following ARC Conference controversy

Danny Rampling has issued a statement in response to what he describes as a "barrage of online abuse" following his connections to the recent Alliance for Responsible Citizenship Conference in London.

Danny Rampling has issued a statement in response to what he says was a “barrage of online abuse” following his connections to the recent Alliance for Responsible Citizenship Conference in London.

“I will not tolerate the bullying, lies, and defamation directed at me in recent days,” Rampling said in the statement. “I have been advised to take legal action against those responsible and demand full apologies.”

Rampling – who many in dance music circles have considered ‘cancelled’ – was responding to media reports about his being booked for an afterparty for the Alliance for Responsible Citizenship Conference, or ARC Conference, by event organiser Matthew Glamore.

An article published on Resident Advisor last month noted that Rampling was set to DJ alongside ‘controversial far-right agitator James O’Keefe’ at the event, going on to list the acid house veteran’s ‘fringe political views’, stating, ‘he’s a vocal opponent of the Covid-19 vaccine, described net-zero carbon emission targets as a “scam” and implied that the World Economic Forum’s Great Reset initiative is an attempt at creating a tyrannical world government.’

Responding to the RA article in his statement, Rampling described ARC as a “think-tank that hosts a highly diverse panel of speakers, encouraging debate on a vast range of topics. Many of the speakers are well informed and erudite, although there are many whose views I disagree with immensely – such is the nature of open discourse. I attended as a guest, nothing more.

Resident Advisor falsely spread rumours, that claim the event was ‘far-right’ when in actuality it was for people who hold legally conservative mainstream views. These false rumours have adversely affected my career and reputation sparking a wave of toxic abuse and hatred.”

Adding that Shoom, Rampling’s legendary London club, was “about unity; bringing people together through music, regardless of class, creed, colour, ethnicity, or sexual orientation”, the DJ added that “I have spent decades championing music that originated in black American neighbourhoods which later became part of the UK’s music scene. My four decades long career and my reputation have been unfairly attacked by individuals with personal grievances and hidden agendas.

“I stand for freedom of speech, unity, and inclusivity – values I have championed throughout my career. Silencing people whose views you disagree with is authoritarian and fuels division. […] The ability to debate and argue with each other is one of our most critical freedoms. Open discourse is vital and I will not allow bullies or ideological extremists to dictate what I can and cannot say or do. This is a coordinated smear campaign and I will fight it.”
