Dutch electronica duo Polynation have released a new EP, Bloom, on Atomnation.
The four-track EP, which features the tracks Hyfen, Bloom, Ritueel and Fade, seeks to explore the ‘symbiosis between electronically generated sounds and acoustic wind instruments’, and features collaborations with Eric Vloeimans on trumpet and Itai Weissman playing saxophone and EWI, a digital wind instrument.
The result is a “sonic world where the boundaries between electronic and acoustic sounds begin to blur,” as the duo, Stijn Hosman and Hessel Stuut, put it.
“The interesting thing about the EWI is that it plays like a traditional wind instrument but is able to control synthesisers and even samples,” they add. “You get a very organic and fluid tone because of the volume and pitch control, which you couldn’t get any other way. Sometimes we forgot that a recording was actually coming from a synth played through an EWI instead of being played by either trumpet or sax.”
The release of Bloom follows on from last year’s Wald, also released on Atomnation, which was written in a remote forest in Germany and ‘captured the beauty of nature and the joy of isolation’, as well as three previous EPs and an album, Igneous.
Polynation is known for fusing ambient, synth, and minimalist vibes in their live shows, performing at festivals such as Best Kept Secret, ADE, Secret Garden Festival, DGTL, as well as across clubs throughout Europe.
Polynation – Bloom is out now on Atomnation and can be purchased here.
