Paul Kalkbrenner releases ‘Kabelmann’ short film project

Paul Kalkbrenner has announced the launch of Kabelmann, a multi-part short-film project to accompany the electronic music artist’s Kabelmann EP.

The two films, Kabelmann 1 and Kabelmann 2, were created by Mother Berlin and Smuggler, and directed by Björn Rühmann. They were premiered at the Ciclope Festival in Berlin.

“I have always loved exploring how my music can work in visual mediums, whether that’s in the live setting or in cinematic projects like this,” Kalkbrenner commented on the project. “The concept of the Kabelmann made total sense to me, as I have often felt my analog approach to music and performance has made me a bit of an outlier in contemporary electronic music.”

The two films delve into the story of Kabelmann, an otherworldly character who is perpetually tethered to cables, a metaphor for Kalkbrenner’s analog production methods and live-only performance style.

In the first part, Kabelmann embarks on an emotional journey, searching for human connection while burdened by the mysterious energy flowing through his cables, while the second part shifts to a dreamlike afterlife, climaxing in a violent and intense sequence, leaving the character’s fate uncertain.

The project is the second collaboration between Paul and Mother Berlin, who also produced the short film that accompanied his track Schwer last year.

“The process of finding our Kabelmann’s destiny took forever – in a great way,” added Björn Rühmann, the film’s director. “We loved exploring all the ways for this character to become the perfect blend of an alter ego of the artist (Paul) – and a unique, otherworldly hero that captivates the audience.

“To create the most cinematic vision, we worked with fantastic people such as Kevin Howarth (Actor, Kabelmann) and Krzysztof Trojnar (DP, known for his work on Baby Reindeer), just to name a few.”
