Mathew Jonson returns to Crosstown Rebels with his latest EP, Tako Tako, a two-tracker that is set to land on 12 July.
Jonson, whose blend of analogue and hardware gear has enabled him to develop a unique, signature style over the years, is renowned as both a solo artist and for his work with Cobblestone Jazz. He has released a number of singles on Crosstown Rebels over the years, as well as his 2013 album, Her Blurry Pictures.
Commenting on the new release, Jonson said, “In Japanese, “tako” (タコ) refers to both the octopus as an animal and as food. Unlike in English, where “beef” is the food and “cow” is the animal, Japanese often uses the same word for both.
“So, ‘tako’ is used whether you’re talking about the living octopus or a dish made from it. I stopped eating tako 23 years ago when I realised they have significant spiritual importance, not only here on Earth but also across the entire galaxy.”
The title track, Tako Tako, is described as boasting ‘dancing melodies bringing futuristic energy and neon colour to crunchy beats’, while the second track, Just a Little Bit, features a ‘a jostling broken beat with a warm bassline’.
Check it out for yourself this Friday. Mathew Jonson Tako Tako drops via Crosstown Rebels on 12th July 2024.
