#MyRecordBag – Just Her’s top electronica and trip hop classics

Brighton-based DJ and producer Claire Spooner began her career as part of the duo Him_Self_Her, alongside Leon Baggotts – releasing eight EPs and singles, including two on Crosstown Rebels – and when this project wrapped up, she commenced her career as Just Her, kicking things off with the Flatline EP on Suara in 2016, followed by other releases on labels such as Global Underground, Anjunadeep Selador, HE.SHE.THEY and Crosstown Rebels.

The Constant Circles label boss has been busy in recent months, with output on Einmusika, Rhythm Cult, Interstellar, and People Of The Light, and she recently released a remix of Subjacent’s Elward on the latter label (check it out here). Just Her’s new single, alongside Alex Kennon, Long Way Down, is out now via Interstellar, and can be downloaded/streamed here.

A fantastic artist who is also a leading light in Brighton’s LGBTQ music and arts scene, 909originals was delighted to welcome Just Her to contribute this week’s #MyRecordBag playlist – here’s her top electronica and trip hop selections – genres that she “grew up with and listened to the most,” as she tells us.

Bjork – Hyperballad [One Little Indian – 1996]

“Forever and always my favourite electronic artist, opened my eyes to experimental music and is still pushing boundaries today. I’m not sure anyone else will ever come close to her in pure creativity.”

PM Dawn – Set Adrift On Memory Bliss [Gee Street – 1991]

“One of the first 12 inch vinyls in my collection which probably paved my way into a love of trip hop, a timeless classic and a lesson in clever sampling.”

Sofia Kourtesis – By Your Side [Ninja Tune – 2021]

“A pioneering artist in today’s scene and a great live performer, I love how she blurs the lines between electronica and house.”

DJ Ron – Space Jazz [Parousia – 1997]

“I bought the quintessence LP in ’97 and fell in love with soulful D’n’B for the first time and realised how it often merges with electronica in style and feeling.”

Portishead – Sour Times [Go! Beat – 1994]

“Had to include something from Dummy – one of the greatest trip hop albums of all time. Beth Gibbons’ vocals are just so haunting and it really shows in this tune.”

Massive Attack – Inertia Creeps [Circa – 1998]

Mezzanine was another majorly important album in my musical journey, as their sound went darker at this point and for me became more emotional. It’s hard to pick a favourite tune but I remember listening to this one on headphones and being blown away by the sheer power of it.”

Bonobo – Otomo [Ninja Tune – 2022]

“The ultimate electronica artist and live performer. Have been to see him on every tour since Days to Come in 2006, which was at a tiny venue in Nottingham. Then to see him recently play to thousands in my home town of Brighton was a vibe. One of the greatest musicians of our time and Fragments is probably my favourite album of his so far.”

Morcheeba – Tape Loop [China Records – 1996]

“From their debut (and in my opinion their best) album, Who Can You Trust – I went to see them live in the early 2000s and they were unreal.”

The Knife – Silent Shout [Rabid Records – 2006]

“The Knife are one of the few electronica bands to stand the test of time and never make a bad record. Almost 20 years later this tune still sounds like it could have been made today.”

Mr Scruff – Ug [Ninja Tune – 2001]

“An afterparty favourite back in the day, just sit back and groove to it…” 🙂

Thanks to Just Her for her playlist. Keep up to date with her latest releases and tour dates here
