Freudenthal, formerly one-half of production duo Pardon Moi, has held a number of events and showcases under the Feinstoff banner in recent years. Now, the German multi-instrumentalist has announced the launch of the Feinstoff record label, specialising in dark disco, cold wave, indie dance and associated genres.
The first release on the label, which is due out on 31 May, is a remix package of Romanian artist Alexandrina’s Sirin EP, featuring contributions from Curses, Local Suicide, Radondo & Freudenthal, Walentin Pauer, and Borusiade & Mathmatrix. You can pre-order the EP here.
To mark the launch of the new label, Freudenthal offers up his favourite dark disco, indie dance and neo-Italo cuts for this week’s #MyRecordBag feature.
Pardon Moi – Power To The People (Damon Jee Remix) [Roam Recordings]
“The track that started it all in 2017! When we received Damon Jee’s remix, I couldn’t even grasp its future influence on my artistic development and how it would shape the whole dark disco movement. It’s an absolute cornerstone of dark disco.”
Hovr – Holding On (Freudenthal Remix) [Heimlich]
“A remix I did for fellow German Hovr for the Viennese label Heimlich, in 2023. It mixes cold wave and dark disco and is welded with some indie dance forces.”
Invoker – Batumi (Biesmans Remix) [Azzur]
“This is one of my absolute favourites on the dancefloor! Joris is a wizard, and I play loads of his tracks from that era! This remix exerts some special magic, though.”
Montessori ft. Badmoiselle – Aircraft Reel (Dombrance Remix) [Dogs & Vultures]
“This is one of those tracks that has a vibe for days! A trippy vocal meets the typical dark disco-style drops, often featuring a guitar-like, distorted synth-like sound mangled with the insanely cool SH-101 programming that is Dombramces’ hallmark.”
Jake The Rapper & Freudenthal –1982 (Darlyn Vlys Remix) [Roam Recordings]
“A wonderful collab I was allowed to make with Bar 25 legend Jake The Rapper, which got a makeover by Darlyn Vlys. He invokes so much rock spirit in this track with this remix. The rhythm section does the job here.”
Leonie Pernet – Missing Love (Jennifer Cardini & Damon Jee Remix) [InFine]
“Another banger by Damon Jee. This remix is essential to dark disco listening with its 80s melancholy-drenched chords, ethereal vocals, and hard-hitting drums.”
Darlyn Vlys – Bladed (Pardon Moi Remix) [Roam Recordings]
“This is one of the prototype tracks of today’s neo-Italo scene, which we made in 2019. Back then, I had in mind to create something that sounds like the 80s but is also entirely dancefloor-ready mixed. It is a wild fusion between the indie dance of today and vibes such as the Pet Shop Boys or Depeche Mode.”
Club Domani & Emmanuelle – Blush Beat ft Stephanie Glitter (Jerry Bouthier Remix) [Club Domani]
“A beautiful track I love to play in the early hours or openings, which captures the ‘safe space’ vibe we experience in clubbing when it comes to places like Club Domani or House of Lunacy in Berlin. This one has lovely vocals and synth stabs! Italo totale!“
Phil Gerus – Still Blind (Lauer Remix) [Emotional Especial]
“This track has so so much vibe! Dark wave, cold wave, post punk – you name it. Lauer shows his exceptional talent once more with this one, and the vocals are otherworldly, screaming out the 80s!”
VoX LoW – Something is Wrong (Boot & Tax Remix) [Correspondant]
“I want to include this 2016 track in this list because, in my view, it is one of those tracks that built the foundation of what the scene headed for afterwards. I loved playing this back then, and undoubtedly played it countless times. Again, it has that rock spirit, mixed with clubby vibes and weird sounds that trip you out.”
Thanks to Freudenthal for his selections. Various Artists – Sirin Remixes lands on Feinstoff on 31st May 2024, and can be pre-ordered here.
