Sven Väth delves into his musical past with ‘What I Used To Play’ compilation

Artists including Kraftwerk, Frankie Knuckles, New Order and Andrew Weatherall are all featured on a new 36-track compilation from Sven Väth, that explores the music that defined his first decade as a DJ – What I Used To Play.

Due to be released in February of next year, the compilation will be released as a 3-CD deluxe digipack release, as well as a 12 x 12“ vinyl box set, on Cocoon Recordings, and features music from the period 1981 to 1990.

This past February saw Väth release his first solo album for 20 years, which was also the 50th album to be released on his Cocoon label.

The idea for the retrospective compilation came during the pandemic, with Väth reflecting on the origins of his career while locked-down at his apartment in London.

“It was a great trip and with every track, beautiful memories came flooding back,” he says of being cocooned in a “little music room” where he spent several days, “looking way back and reviewing my musical journey through the eighties.”

From a longlist of 120 tracks, encompassing early 80s, Balearic, Afrobeat, European new wave, EBM, house and techno, a shortlist of 36 tracks was developed, which tracks Väth’s development from DJing at his parents’ pub onto club such as Dorian Gray and Vogue, which later became Omen.

And yes, for Sven Väth purists, OFF – Electrica Salsa IS on there.

The album is available to pre-order here.
