Orbital have announced plans to officially release their iconic Glastonbury Festival performance from 1994 on vinyl, CD, and across digital platforms.

Set for release on 25 September through London Records, Orbital – Glastonbury 1994 presents the complete concert, restored and remastered from the original desk tapes by Mark Ayres. The performance was originally broadcast by the BBC, and has circulated unofficially for many years, but this marks its first authorised release.

Taking place at a time when dance music was still largely associated with clubs and rave culture, Orbital’s appearance at Glastonbury demonstrated that electronic artists could perform to large festival audiences alongside established rock acts – a game changer for the nascent movement.

“At the time, you were either an indie kid or you were a raver, but they came and saw our set and the penny dropped,” Orbital’s Paul Hartnoll says of the performance. “It made that connection between indie music and dance music.”

“All I remember is the energy from the crowd, this love – oozing out, like it was vibrating from them,” Phil Hartnoll adds. “It was just an amazing feeling.”

Elsewhere, Emily Eavis describes the performance as an important moment in Glastonbury’s history – the “night everything changed” at the festival. “It was the first time I had seen anything like this on one of the main stages – it felt like the start of something new. And we’ve not looked back since.”
