Dates announced for ‘Where is the night?’ series of public talks
Give Us The Night, a group of industry professionals campaigning to modernise Ireland’s night-time economy, has announced details of its ‘Where is the night?’ series of meetings, which kicks off on 26 February at The Bodega, Cork.
Following multiple public and industry consultations since 2020, as well as a string of announcements from the government, the much-discussed Sale of Alcohol Bill – the piece of legislation that is set to reform Irish nightlife – has yet to make progress and remains in a state of uncertainty.
‘No opening hours have been extended, no new permits created, no repeal of the 1935 Public Dance Halls Act (the ‘licence to dance’), no reform of licensing application processes and costs, etc. Irish nightlife remains in the last century,’ the organisers said.
The aim of the meetings, which will take in Dublin, Waterford, Kerry, Sligo, Galway and Limerick, will be to primarily discuss this licensing reform, what challenges still remain, and when/how the laws are likely to be enacted.
In addition, they will examine the impact is this delayed reform having on the Irish night-time economy, as well as on social and cultural life in general – and what needs to be done?

Give Us The Night have put out the call to venue owners, cultural programmers, promoters, performers, managers, workers, advocates, nightlife goers and supporter, to attend the meetings, while also welcoming public representatives and election candidates.
‘As we edge towards local elections, with a general election also in sight, we’d like public representatives to be more aware of what local communities and night-time venues need in the future, as we aim to reshape the night and the night-time economy in Ireland,’ the organisers noted.
