System 7 have announced details of their first studio album for 11 years, Flower of Life, which is set to be released on 17 April.

It’s the first long player released by the duo, aka Steve Hillage and Miquette Giraudy, since 2015’s X-Port, and features collaborations with Coldcut’s Matt Black and Alex Paterson and Michael Rendall from The Orb.

As a press release put it, ‘Fusing uplifting techno with layered grooves and mind-bending soundscapes, on Flower of Life [System 7] proudly present themselves as unapologetic psychonauts, with a deep refusal for convention, and an ever-evolving sound. Glorious, hypnotic rhythms and expertly-crafted driving beats induce a trance-like euphoria, designed to radically alter our mind state.’

System 7 was initially formed as a collective in 1989 with The Orb‘s Paterson and Youth on board, before evolving into a duo and releasing the acclaimed 777 in 1993. Hillage and Giraudy’s roots, meanwhile, stretch back to the countercultural music scenes of the 1960s and 1970s. Hillage and Giraudy first gained recognition through their work with the psychedelic rock collective Gong, before transitioning into electronic music during the rise of acid house in the late 1980s.

Over the years, the group has collaborated with artists such as Guy Called Gerald, Laurent Garnier, Paul Oakenfold, Derrick May, and Jam El Mar (of Jam and Spoon), whilst remixes have come from Doc Scott, The Advent, Jacob’s Optical Stairway (4 Hero), Carl Craig, Dubfire (Deep Dish), Ritchie Hawtin (Plastikman), James Holden, Josh Wink, Carl Cox, and Moody Boyz.

System 7 – Flower of Life is released on 17 April.
