Production duo Red Axes are the next act to helm fabric Records’ prestigious mix series, fabric presents.

Released on 20 March, the 16-track mix features tracks by artists such as A Guy Called Gerald, James Infiltrate, The New Black, DJ Naughty and more, as well as Red Axes’ recently-released Hot Rod To Hell And Back, a dancefloor rework of Man Parrish and Roy Garrett’s 27-minute electro epic from 1982.

Red Axes, aka Dori Sadovnik and Niv Arzi, are known for their hypnotic, psychedelic take on dance music, drawing on post-punk, acid, krautrock, and cosmic disco. They’re set to perform at fabric London on 21 March, alongside DJ Tennis, who headed up the previous fabric presents mix, released in February.

For this week’s #MyRecordBag, Red Axes serve up their top New York disco, punk-funk and downtown groove selections. Over to you, guys!

“This selection digs into late 70s/early 80s downtown NYC – the moment where disco energy, punk attitude, and experimental rhythms all collided in the same room. Stripped-down grooves, hypnotic basslines, and minimal percussion defined the underground dance floors of that era, and those same elements feed directly into our Fabric mix, even if that one leans harder on the club side. Working with Salvatore Principato (Sal P) brought us back to this raw NYC aesthetic – where repetition becomes trance and groove becomes movement.”

Fist of Facts – First Strike (from the album Fugitive Vesco)

“Dub-infused downtown NYC groove with minimal percussion and hypnotic energy, including great vocals by Sal P.”

Konk – Your Life

“NYC punk-funk / disco hybrid – tight rhythms and jagged guitar lines built for the dance floor.”

ESG – Moody

“Minimal Bronx funk – dry percussion, repeating bass, one of the foundational underground NYC grooves.”

Mode/IQ – Competition

“Experimental synth-punk / No-Wave out of NYC – psychedelic, hypnotic, deeply underground.”

James White & The Blacks – Contort Yourself (Buy Version)

“Minimalist punk-funk with a real NYC downtown edge – chaotic, rhythmic, and somehow danceable.”

Material – Bustin’ Out

“Funk meets dub and avant-garde – Bill Laswell’s downtown collective at their most groove-focused.”

Bush Tetras – Too Many Creeps

“Angular post-punk fused with danceable funk – raw NYC underground all the way through.”

Defunkt – Strangling Me With Your Love

“Explosive NYC punk-funk with heavy brass, slap bass and raw dancefloor energy. One of the clearest bridges between downtown jazz-funk, No Wave attitude and underground disco grooves.”

Polyrock – Romantic Me

“Minimal post-punk with downtown NYC rhythm – hypnotic, angular, and surprisingly club-compatible. Produced by Philip Glass.”

Alan Vega – Saturn Drive

“Dark, hypnotic electronic groove from NYC underground icon Alan Vega. Saturn Drive blends minimal synth pulses, raw rhythm machines, and Vega’s haunting vocal presence into a stripped-down downtown club atmosphere – capturing the shadowy late-night energy of early-80s New York.”
