Dames Brown unveil debut album, 'Take Me As I Am'

Detroit vocal trio Dames Brown have unveiled their debut album, Take Me As I Am, which has just been released on Defected Records.

The nine-track album includes collaborations with Andrés, Eddie Fowlkes, and Waajeed, with additional appearances from Paul Randolph, Chris Bruce, and Will Sessions, and bridges the gap between Detroit’s gospel traditions, funk, and house music.

The album also acts as a tribute to the group’s late mentor and producer, Amp Fiddler, who passed away in 2023 – the album was largely recorded in his home studio.

“To watch our seeds rooted in pure soul blossom into Take Me As I Am is sublime. It shows you exactly who we are – brilliant vocal musicians coming together as one to create a genuine, heartfelt album,” the group commented.

“Presented by our brother, Detroit’s own Amp Fiddler, this collection of songs offers a glimpse into our interpretation of house music, as it draws on the influences of techno, P-Funk, gospel, and 1970s soul. This organic, homegrown gem is a culmination of love and dedication — a musical sisterhood.”

Tracks include You’re The One For Me, which has been released as a single, What Would You Do, Glory, and the title track, Take Me As I Am. Several tracks feature Amp Fiddler, including What Would You Do, What Up Doe?, Provider, and Ova.

Dames Brown’s relationship with Defected Records began almost ten years ago, with their first track on the label a collaboration with Sophie Lloyd on Calling Out. Since then, they have appeared on releases by The Vision and Floorplan, and have contributed vocals to projects by Horse Meat Disco, Louie Vega and Josh Milan, and Folamour.

Following the release of the album, a 7-inch remix of the title track by Moodymann is scheduled to follow.

Dames Brown – Take Me As I Am is released on Defected on 21 January. Check it out here.
