Mochakk is heading up a new documentary series, Funk do Brasil, produced by Beatport in partnership with ONErpm, which explores the development of Brazilian funk and the communities that support it.
Born in the suburbs of Rio de Janeiro in the 1980s, and blending electro, Miami bass and local musical styles, funk – also known as baile funk – has become one of Brazil’s most powerful cultural exports, influencing artists far removed from the social context of Rio’s favelas.
The documentary traces this movement through three cities – Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Belo Horizonte – including interviews with artists and producers, visits to performance spaces, analysis of the fashion and culture surrounding it, and an exploration of how the music has been shaped by local conditions.
Artists set to appear over the three episodes include Mu540, Bonekinha Iraquiana, MC GW, Dennis, MC Marsha, MC Duzinho do Cabaré, DJ Ramon Sucesso, VHOOR, Mac Júlia and Gordão do PC.
Beatport officially recognised Brazilian funk as a genre on its platform back in April, with the series cementing the ‘unique sound that has been emanating from the country for decades and finding its way onto dance floors worldwide,’ according to a press release. ‘No longer hidden as a subcategory, Brazilian Funk now has dedicated charts and playlists, giving DJs, artists, and labels greater visibility on a global stage – a turning point for a sound once overlooked.’
