“I can’t get no sleep…” Faithless’ Insomnia turns 30 years old

Faithless have marked the 30th anniversary of their seminal track Insomnia with a new vinyl release, which includes both the 12″original alongside the Monster Mix, Moody Mix, and Tuff Mix.

The re-release is presented in a replica die-cut Cheeky Records sleeve, echoing the design of the 1995 original, complete with an Insomnia zoetrope design.

The track was released in November 1995 on Rollo’s Cheeky Records and was arguably the stand-out track on Faithless’ debut album, Reverence, thanks to its iconic synth riff and the late Maxi Jazz’s spoken word delivery.

Initially, it topped the UK Dance Chart but received slower mainstream recognition – one year after its initial release, its re-release saw it climb to #3 in the pop-charts. Since then, it has earned 3x Platinum certification in the UK, and surpassed 500 million global streams.

“Can’t quite believe it’s the 30th anniversary of our song Insomnia, which has become a defining hymn for the dance floor over the decades,” Faithless’ Sister Bliss commented. “It opened so many doors for us – drawing attention to our first album Reverence, which was largely ignored upon release… then allowing us to (chaotically) form a live band in order to promote that album, which then lead to tours across the globe, now continuing in honour of Maxi into the 2020s and beyond.

“When asked if we were bored of performing Insomnia, Maxi would always reply ‘never’! Because we loved how much pleasure it gave people to hear it – whether for the first time or the hundredth. Most bands wait a lifetime to have a track connect in this global way – we are forever grateful to
all our fans for their enduring love for Insomnia. Over time, it gained momentum through club play and support from key DJs such as Pete Tong, eventually becoming a defining track in electronic music history.”

Earlier this year, Disclosure released a new remix of Insomnia, debuting it at their set during Glastonbury 2025.

Faithless recently returned to live performance after a hiatus, playing a string of sold-out shows in the UK and Europe, including headline slots at Brixton Academy, Alexandra Palace, and Glastonbury Festival, as well as releasing their eighth studio album, Champion Sound.
