With Air touring their 1998 classic Moon Safari this year, British producer Vegyn, aka Joe Thornalley, has unveiled a ‘reimagining’ of the album, titled Blue Moon Safari.
Vegyn, who came to prominence due to his work with Frank Ocean and Travis Scott, among others, is renowned for his atmospheric soundscapes and experimental beats, and on Blue Moon Safari, he seeks to bring a contemporary twist to an ambient-pop classic.
A couple of years ago, Thornalley received an email: would he like to remix All I Need, from Moon Safari, to be considered for a full-album redux project? “I’m such a huge fan of theirs, so it was an instant yes,” he explains. “Talkie Walkie, 10 000 Hz Legend, Pocket Symphony, The Virgin Suicides. I had their CDs and listened to them a lot growing up. So to get to reimagine any of their songs was such an honour that I really wanted to approach it with respect.”
Released on 11 April, Blue Moon Safari is available on blue vinyl, with Vegyn’s reworking of tracks such as Sexy Boy, La Femme d’Argent and All I Need retaining ‘the essence of the originals while pushing into new territories’, as a press release put it. Our standout track is Vegyn’s take on Talisman, one of the more underrated tracks from the original, which is now crafted into an otherworldly vibe.
Commenting on the project, Air co-founder Nicolas Godin adds “When we were younger, No Protection, the Mad Professor remix of Massive Attack’s album Protection, was un exemple of a cool thing to do.
“We asked another artist to try a dub remix of the album to match our original fantasy, and it was very hard to decide who to ask to remix the album, because we wanted a coherent listening experience – not a collection of remixes – but we know Joe’s records, are interested in his productions and he’s very easy to collaborate with from a human point of view, so for us it was obvious.”
Air commenced the third international tour leg to mark the 25th anniversary of Moon Safari in March of this year, having already performed 77 shows across Europe, North America, Latin America, Asia and Australia.
Blue Moon Safari is released on 11 April, and more information can be found here.
