“Personally, there is no other club I spent more time in, have experienced more meaningful or crazy, fun moments, and played more hours than in Berghain.” So techno legend Len Faki told 909originals earlier this year.
Now, two decades on from its inauspicious start, and with its notoriety well ingrained the world over (don’t ask us for the secret to getting in, we haven’t a clue), the Friedrichshain, Berlin club celebrates its 20th anniversary Klubnacht in December, with an event kicking off at midnight on Friday 13th, and finishing up some time on Monday 16th.
As you might expect, the lineup is as close to a ‘techno’s greatest hits’ as you could possibly imagine – artists playing in Berghain include (in alphabetical order), AMORAL, Amotik, Answer Code Request, Barker, Ben Klock, Beste Hira, Daria Kolosova, DJ Pete, Efdemin, Etapp Kyle, Fadi Mohem, Fiedel, Honey Dijon, JakoJako, Kittin, Kyle Geiger, Len Faki, Luke Slater, Marcel Dettmann, Norman Nodge, Phase Fatale, Quelza, Rene Wise, Rodhad, Shinedoe, Steffi, Tasha, Terence Fixmer and Vincent Neuman.
Panorama Bar, meanwhile, will feature Alex Kassian, André Galluzzi, Avalon Emerson, Âme, BASHKKA, Boris, Cormac, Curses, Dinky, Gerd Janson, Lakuti, Massimiliano Pagliara, Matthew Styles, Natalie Robinson, nd_baumecker, Ogazón, PARAMIDA, Ralf, Richard Akingbehin, Roi Perez, Seth Troxler, Soundstream, Steve Rachmad, Tama Sumo, The Blessed Madonna and Virginia. Lastly the Elektroakustischer Salon will feature Jin Synth (Live), Nazanin Noori (Live), Tobias. (Live), Banu, Grant Gibson, Jenus, Margaux Missteikk and mxwhd.
As Len Faki also recently put it in a post on Instagram, recalling his own involvement in the club, “I played the opening night and actually remember it very well. Of course I didn’t know about the impact this place will have for our world but I remember that my gut told me this night that we are up for something new – something big and unique that might have the power to change everything. It was a wild ride through all those years, meeting great people and dancing through unforgettable nights.”
For those fancying dancing till dawn, through to night, to dawn, through to night, and to dawn again (phew!), more information is available at www.berghain.de.
