Carl Cox has selected what he has described as his ‘absolute superstar’ records from his 150,000-strong vinyl collection for a new art collaboration with UK photographic artist Mark Vessey.
With more than four decades of DJing under his belt, Cox has selected records spanning funk, soul, disco, rare groove, rave, Detroit techno, hip hop, electro and 80s pop for the work, entitled Carl, which will be launched at Enter Gallery in Brighton on 20 July.
“Each record I choose has a story behind it and it was very emotional choosing the records that helped shape my journey,” Cox commented. “Watching Mark work really makes me understand how you can look deeper into art and it makes me realise what I privilege and responsibility I have when sharing my love of music with the dancefloor.”
At Enter Gallery, a 150cm x 150cm representation of Carl, will be displayed, while limited edition reprints will be available to buy, in a range of sizes (80cm x 80cm, 95cm x 95cm, 110cm x 110 cm C-type photograph).
Artists featured in the work include Run DMC, Carrie Lucas, Fleetwood Mac, Duran Duran, Lil Louis, Doug Lazy and many more.
“Every single one of these records are not promos,” Cox added. “I literally went to the record store and stood there and went through the music – this collection is the best of the best.”
Vessey’s work with Cox follows on from previous collaborations with Norman Cook aka Fatboy Slim and Founder of Defected Records Simon Dunmore, which also featured a ‘DJ and vinyl’ theme.
“It has been an honour to work with Carl Cox, to have his trust and time to explore his archive. Carl Cox is unique in sewing together multiple generations through his passion of music,” Vessey commented. “That passion and love has been shared and absorbed by him through his vinyl collection, each one of his vinyls holds its own piece of his story. My hope in photographing them together, is that they visually reflect his love and shared history back to us.”
