#MyRecordBag – Passarella Death Squad reveal their dark, vocal electronica favourites

Passarella Death Squad are London-based artists Danny Passarella and Emilie Albisser, who have become synonymous with haunting electronica and sweeping soundscapes for more than 15 years.

Inspired by Andy Warhol’s Factory, the Passarella universe encompasses a successful clothing brand, art (with exhibitions and installations in Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Brussels, Paris, London, Beijing and Tokyo), and music, with Passarella Death Squad releasing its first 12″ in 2007 and debut album three years later.

Passarella and Albisser have just announced details of their long-awaited second long player, What We Are, You Shall Be, which is due to be released on 21 April, and promises ‘otherworldly’, ‘gothic’ and ‘hypnotic’ beats across ten tracks. More information is available here.

To mark their return, we asked Passarella Death Squad to put together a dark, vocal electronica playlist as part of our regular MyRecordBag series. Over to you, Danny and Emilie…!

Japan – Nightporter

“Around 2004 Passarella Death Squad ran a monthly night in North London called ‘Sunday Depression.’. These are some of the tracks we used to play there. The actual Night Porter soundtrack by Daniele Paris is equally beautiful.”

This Mortal Coil – Another Day

“This track is stunning. My favourite Elizabeth Fraser vocal.”

Suicide – Cheree

“The masters of minimal electronics. The whole Suicide by Suicide album is incredible.”

Broadcast – Black Cat

“Rest In peace Trish Keenan.”

Malaria! – Your Turn To Run

“Could also have put Malaria!’s ‘Kaltes Klares Wasser’ on here, but went for the Chicks On Speed version…”

Chicks On Speed – Kaltes Klares Wasser

“I first heard of Chicks On Speed via the excellent Heavenly Social mix CD by Richard Fearless. Eurotrash Girl is another fantastic record of theirs.”

HTRK – Ha

“Melbourne’s finest.”

Siouxsie And The Banshees – Red Light

“This track, or Tenant from their Kaleidoscope album.”

DJ Hell – Suicide Commando

“Another discovery via the Fearless Heavenly Social CD.”

Cocteau Twins – Feathers Oar-Blades

“Around 2003 Robin Guthrie created a mix for the French website D-I-R-T-Y. I think it’s long since gone offline but if you can find it, it’s 48 minutes of Guthrie guitar bliss.”

The The – Three Orange Kisses From Kazan

“Only available on the cassette version of Soul Mining, I’m not sure why these tracks weren’t reissued with the re-release – they were all great.”

Passarella Death Squad – What We Are, You Shall Be is released on Passarella Records on 21 April 2023. More information is available here.
