Happy birthday to the ‘Godfather of House Music’…

Today, 18 January, would have been Frankie Knuckles’ 63rd birthday.

Arguably the most important name in the foundation of what we now call ‘house’ music (so named due to his residency at Chicago’s Warehouse club), Knuckles, real name Francis Nicholls, died in May 2014 – another guiding light gone too soon. He was 59.

To toast the great man’s influence on electronic music, here’s a snippet of the great man from October 1986, at the opening of the short-lived Power House club in Chicago, perhaps the only thing he touched that didn’t turn to gold.

“How hot is house music right now?” the interviewer asks at one point.
“On a scale of one to ten?” Knuckles responds. “It’s 12…”

Happy birthday and rest in peace, ‘Godfather of House Music’.
