The D’Side project

In 1993, with magazines like The Face and I-D enjoying strong circulation in Ireland, a new publication was launched to reflect the lifestyle of an increasingly cosmopolitan youth market – D’Side.

Founded by future IMAGE editor and entrepreneur Melanie Morris,D’Side ran for around a decade, coinciding with the emergence of the Celtic Tiger, before being wound up in 2002.

As Hot Press reported at the time of its closure, “The problem wasn’t D’Side‘s own performance, but the fact that the publishers invested heavily in John Ryan’s Stars On Sunday project. As soon as that went belly-up, you felt that D’Side was living on borrowed time.”

909originals has got its hands on a pile of back issues of D’Side, and we plan to scan each of them for research purposes, so future historians can observe what Dublin was really like in the 90s – if you were there, you know… 🙂

To kick things off, let’s step back in time to December 1993, and the first issue of D’Side, featuring articles on Kilkenny rockers Engine Alley, Windmill Lane studios, the condoms of Europe, Pod impresario John Reynolds, Dustin the Turkey and much more.

More issues to follow, as and when I have time to upload them. 🙂
