#MyRecordBag – Myd presents ‘folk for club people’

French producer Myd first rose to prominence as a member of the Club Cheval collective, before finding home as a solo artist on Ed Banger Records, which released his 2021 debut album Born A Loser.

That was followed in August of this year by the release of his second long player, Mydnight, which boasts ‘euphoric, melancholic, and defiantly fun’ moments across 13 tracks, including collaborations with Channel Tres, Calcutta, Trueno, Carlita and Bethanie Home – check it out here

The Lille native will be following up the release of the album with a tour of North America, taking in stops in Montreal, Toronto, New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Mexico this November and December, following a series of recent festival appearances in Europe.

For the latest #MyRecordBag, Myd presents a playlist of ‘folk for club people’ – “Exactly the two genres that created my style,” as he puts it.

Merope – Vėjula

“A Lithuanian-Belgian collective blending ancient instruments like kanklės with electronics. Feels both centuries-old and totally future. A ritual in slow motion.”

House and Land – Two Sisters (Instrumental)

“A minimalist Appalachian murder ballad, stripped to its rhythmic bones. Banjo and guitar looped until the groove becomes its own kind of tension.”

Osi and the Jupiter – Appalachia

“Pagan American folk with droning synths and ritual drums. Feels like a sunrise ceremony somewhere remote and sacred.”

Ale Hop & Titi Bakorta – Asi Baila El Sintetizador

“Congolese soukous rebuilt with modular synths. Joyful, polyrhythmic, and glitchy in all the right places. Ritual meets chaos.”

Murzik – Into the Darkness

“Dark folk with accordion, glockenspiel, and theatrical overtones. Think cabaret goth walking through a snowy forest. Slow and magnetic.”

Jacob Alon – Of Amber

“Modern Scottish folk layered with irregular percussion and subtle electronic interference. Melancholy in motion.”

Chancha Vía Circuito – Coplita

“Argentinian producer mixing cumbia rhythms with traditional vocals and electronic textures. Gentle loops made for dancing with your eyes closed.”

Steve Reich – Electric Counterpoint, played by Pat Metheny

“Hypnotic chords that still sound incredibly modern. It could easily be a track from the future. As it evolves, it transforms into something almost like an artificial guitar concert, both mechanical and human at the same time. Wonderful and endlessly inspiring.”

James Vincent McMorrow – Rising Water

“This one feels like taking a NEU! song and turning it into something that could close a set at 9am., just as the sun starts to rise. There’s a dreamy energy to it, calm, euphoric and nostalgic all at once.”

Doris – Overzealous

“The most dirty and disrespectful way of sampling happy, strummed guitars. Maybe the sexiest way to do it too. It’s playful, bold and just the right amount of chaos.”
