#MyRecordBag – Nichols & Roark’s ‘brain music’ selections

For this week's #MyRecordBag, Nichols & Roark present their 'brain music' selection – tracks that have inspired them to craft stories through sound, sparking thought as well as feeling.

Progressive duo Nichols & Roark have had a busy summer, with their August single Static Orders followed in the past few days by a new single on Lee Burridge’s All Day I Dream imprint, Melodica, which can be downloaded/streamed here.

The duo, who operate the SHIFT label and events platform, have also appeared at venues such as Pikes, Cafe Del Mar and Wildfields festival in recent months, with shows at Gospel (New York), Art Basel (Miami) and Amsterdam Dance Event on the agenda. As well as their own imprint and All Day I Dream, the pair have released tracks on labels like Balance, The Soundgarden and Selador.

For this week’s #MyRecordBag, Nichols & Roark present their ‘brain music’ selection – tracks that have inspired them to craft stories through sound.

Depeche Mode – Enjoy The Silence (Sgt Slick ReCut)

“It would be hard to put together any record bag without a Depeche Mode track, and Enjoy the Silence carries such a compelling message. It always gives us the feels. A great remix—many have tried, but few have succeeded. It feels like it’s time for us to give it a go.”

Bitstream – Monolith

“I used to listen to the vinyl of this track over and over on repeat, moving the needle back to the start but never getting bored. I was completely locked in, fully surrendering to the hypnotic melodies. We dare you not to feel the power of this track.

I-F – Space Invaders Are Smoking Grass

“Dave Clarke introduced us to this track. Some music makes you feel happy, some makes you feel sad, and some makes your entire body tingle. This track makes you feel like you’re having an out-of-body experience… and it’s an incredibly enjoyable one.”

Noir & Haze – Around [Solomun Vox Mix]

“This track, expertly remixed by Solomun, allows you to experience loss and longing, but then the true beauty cuts through as you find resolution and pleasure. It’s like a joyful ‘middle finger’ to anyone who’s ever wronged you. Sounds absolutely fantastic at 7am in Pacha.”

Junk Project – Composure

“This track was featured on a Paul Oakenfold Global Underground album. We used to play it at the afters, and the icy, chilling beauty of the pads would wash over the room, creating a spiritual moment. Hands in the air were replaced by introspection, but not from a dark place – rather, from a space where we all felt that there is so much beauty left to discover in the world. A truly cathartic track.”

Criss Source – Hugs’n Kisses (Original)

“Our final selection just makes you want to rise up against the system. It feels like punk rock for ravers – angry yet happy, driving music with purpose. Teeth may be clenched.”

Thanks to Nichols & Roark for their selections. Their latest single, Melodica, is out now on All Day I Dream.
