Irish producer Kormac has announced details of a forthcoming new single, Down Below, on his Always The Sound imprint.
The single, which features vocals from ØXN’s Katie Kim, marks a new chapter in Kormac’s musical approach, as he immersed himself in modular synths and drum machines at his Dublin studio.
“The collaboration with Katie happened almost by accident,” Kormac commented. “I love her music and sampled the vocal from her track Pause, really just to use as a placeholder, to write over until I got someone in to sing. It sat so well with the chords and drums I came up with I decided to reach out and chance my arm!.
“I wasn’t sure if she’d be up for me using her vocal in such a different context but she came back saying she loved it and was so gracious about it all.”
Kormac is best known for his widescreen, collaborative projects with everyone from Irvine Welsh to 30-piece orchestras, but this latest single sees him deliberately strip things back, adopting a chiefly analogue approach to production.
This release follows a period of prolific scoring work for Kormac, including the award-winning soundtrack to Steven Knight’s This Town and the IFTA-nominated The Boy That Never Was. Elsewhere, his most recent album, Equivalent Exchange, saw him work alongside Loah, Jafaris, Jack O’Rourke, MayKay, Shahab & Shayan Coohe and Stephen James Smith, as well as sell out the National Concert Hall in Dublin.
Kormac – Down Below feat. Katie Kim is out 18 July on Always The Sound. You can pre-order it here.
