Carl Craig has released a rare track from his back catalogue, The Truth, ahead of the release of a soundtrack to accompany the recent documentary, Desire: The Carl Craig Story.
Directed by Jean-Cosme Delaloye and produced by Sovereign Films, Desire: The Carl Craig Story tracks Craig’s journey from his roots in Detroit to global acclaim, set against the city’s decline and recovery. It also explores his work at the intersection of music, art, and culture, from his collaborations with Bottega Veneta to his Party/After-Party installation, acquired by the Detroit Institute of Arts and exhibited at MOCA Los Angeles.
The documentary features interviews with the likes of Gilles Peterson, Roni Size, Laurent Garnier, DJ Minx, Kenny Larkin, Moritz von Oswald, and James Lavelle.
The single was released under Craig’s one-off concept alias, Designer Music, and was originally a B-side, to the track Problemz, released in 2000.
It’s reminiscent of other Craig tracks such as Desire and At Les, which also feature on the soundtrack, alongside his Grammy-nominated Junior Boys remix of Like A Child, Innerzone Orchestra’s Bug In The Bassbin, and much more.
Following its Tribeca premiere, the documentary debuted in 30 select theatres in the UK and Ireland on 8 May, with a US release scheduled for this summer. Special screenings are also being held this weekend at Michigan Central, coinciding with Movement Festival.
