Having been an influential duo on the UK tech house scene in the 90s and 2000s, most notably for their their series of colour-themed EPs (Purple, Green, Yellow, Red etc), Circulation returned as a solo project for producer Paul Davis in 2022.
In February of this year, his latest single, the cinematic Flight, marked a blistering return to form, and on 11 April he follows it up with Bad Luck, a two-track EP set to be released on Sasha‘s Last Night On Earth label.
Ahead of that, we’re delighted to welcome Circulation to contribute to our #MyRecordBag series, where he serves up his 90s tech house classics. Over to you, Paul!
Daft Punk – Alive (New Wave Final Mix) (Soma)
“One of my favourite Daft Punk tracks from a four-track EP on Soma Records. I played this so much back in the day—never failed to disappoint. A massive track for me, never left my playlist.”
Planetary Assault Systems – Booster (Peacefrog)
“I remember playing this at John Digweed’s Bedrock 2nd Birthday in London. Pitched down a bit, it took the roof off—a big slice of umptious, funky techno in the proper sense of the word. Weapon.”
Kylie Minogue – I Believe in You (Skylark Remix) (Parlophone)
“Start-of-the-night business this, but catchy as—such a hypnotic groove, great bassline, beautiful pads. Guaranteed to get the dancefloor moving.”
Circulation – Swank (Mango Alley)
“My debut on this fantastic label and one of my personal favourites of the tracks that I have written. Deep, dark, and moody. It came with some great mixes from Ruben Karapetyan and Hobin Rude.”
Gutto Serta – Dual Saw (Bar 25 Music)
“Peak-time, heads-down, no-nonsense track this—great percussion and driving bassline.”
Martijn ten Velden – Dreamcatcher (Plastic Fantastic)
“Just can’t stop playing this track since I received it at the start of the year. Again, another track that I’ll hold on to for a while.”
Unami – Stank (truecolours)
“Deep, deep hypnotic track that I’ve been playing on and off since it came out a few years back. Not peak-time, but always gets a great reaction after the drop.”
Jimpy – Real DJs (Aubrey Fry Mix) (Rhythm Cult)
“Warm-up or end of night—eight and a half minutes of a deep melodic techno journey. Absolutely blissful.”
Fauxplay – Unchained (Ranj Kaler’s 2nd Separation Remix) (Music to Die For)
“This disco-influenced track with rolling bassline and massive old skool piano break works every time.”
Thanks to Circulation for your selections. The Bad Luck EP is released on Last Night On Earth on 11 April. More information can be found here.
