Hailing from Cape Verde via Portugal, and raised in New York, Anané has been an established name on the house music scene for two decades, for her own productions such as Let Me Love You, Terra Longe, Love To Love You Baby, and Standing In Line, for her labels Nulu Music and Nulu Electronic, and for her work as a vocalist with Masters At Work co-founder Louie Vega… who also happens to be her husband.
Her latest release is a remix package of her recent single Let Me Be Your Fantasy, released last month on Nervous Records, which featured reworkings by Dimitri From Paris, Masters At Work, Mousse T, Moplen and more. You can check that out here.
For the latest #MyRecordBag feature, Anané serves up her top New York house classics – expect all killer, no filler. Over to you, Anané!
Mike Dunn – The Pressure Cooker
“Underground raves upstate NY, danced for hours!”
Pal Joey – Dance
“The jam for the circle dancers, some baby powder sprinkled on the dance floor and we glided through the night – wow, good times indeed!”
Alcatraz – Give Me Luv
“The 90’s in NYC was solely about getting lost in music, or as I like to say, ‘I found myself in music’. This track here was one of those that just took you on a musical trip.”
Jaydee – Plastic Dreams
“A classic of all classics; when this came on it shifted the energy of the dancefloor. I am from the era where it was just as much about the circle of dancers as it was about the DJ rockin’ it.”
Nuyorican Soul featuring George Benson – You Can Do It (Baby)
“I can’t reference the 90’s without mentioning Masters At Work. I had just moved to NYC and had the opportunity to visit Base Hit Studios when they were recording this song with George Benson. Never in a million years would I have imagined where I would end up, but here I am.
“This song was a forever classic at Sound Factory Bar, where Louie played every Wednesday night at the Underground Network party hosted by Don Welch and Barbara Tucker. Anyone who was someone in music was there on Wednesday night, from Queen Latifah, to Wesley Snipes, Eric Morillo, Blaze…and me on the dance floor.”
Paul Johnson – Get Get Down
“Paul was a dear friend, may he rest in peace and this classic will carry his musical legacy and still rock a dance floor today!”
Nightcrawlers – Push The Feeling On
“A 90’s classic that has been sampled so much. Showcasing this original is so important for me, not to mention it still rocks a dancefloor today!”
Robert Owens – I’ll Be Your Friend
“Music with a message!”
Lil’ Mo’ Yin Yang – Reach
“A dirty classic by Louie Vega and Eric Morillo.”
House Of Gypsies – Somba
“For me this was the intro of hearing tribal vocals on a house music track, today I have my Afro label Nulu Music! It was the track that had us ‘circle children’ on the dancefloor at BabyHead in Providence, what incredible memories for me. It’s a full circle moment as I’m doing this interview, going back in time and never imagining I’d be where I am today!”
