Quicche, aka German singer-songwriter and composer Marc Grünhäuser, recently unveiled new single Red Eyes, the third release from his forthcoming debut album, Frisia, set for release on R&S Records in April.
Drawing elements from folktronica, shoegaze, and ambient, Red Eyes reflects the mood of the album, which was recorded in self-imposed isolation during a month-long retreat in Northern Germany.
“Lyrically, Red Eyes is a direct challenge to anyone who has a bad influence on you,” he said of the track. “Writing the text felt very liberating, as if it had opened a valve that had been under pressure for a long time.”
Grünhäuser cites the indietronica (indie electronica) movement as a key influence on his sound, and with that in mind, for the latest #MyRecordBag feature, Quicche presents his all-time indie electronica classics. Over to you, Quicche!
Bon Iver – Everything Is Peaceful Love
“I could probably include every Bon Iver song since 22, A Million here, but for the sake of simplicity I’ve concentrated on the latest single. I love the combination of organic sounds, artificial influences, catchy melodies and experimental touches – so good!”
Fred Again – Cmon
“The whole album is clearly my favourite ambient release of the last few years.”
Burial, Four Tet, Thom Yorke – Her Revolution
“When these artists work together, only good things can come out of it, right? The textures that this song carries have stayed with me since I first heard it.”
Jon Hopkins – Immunity
“If we’re talking about textures, this song is a must! Jon Hopkins had a groundbreaking influence on me, especially in terms of sampling my own music and appreciating noise.”
PSILK – Jade
“I recently came across this artist and have been listening to him on repeat ever since. Although we live and work on different continents, I feel like our musical socialisation is connected. His whole catalog is just great!”
Orbit – Friday Night (Live)
“Orbit makes some of the most exciting music for me at the moment and even though I see parallels in our approach to music, he has definitely managed to create a very unique sound that is instantly recognisable. I especially love this live version!”
Pocket – 80HD
“Speaking of Orbit: I found this song while listening to a playlist from Orbit. What a unique and innovative production – I listen to this song at least once a day at the moment.”
Tim Hecker – Shipyards of La Ceiba
“The moment I heard this song for the first time felt really eye-opening. I feel so much when I listen to Tim Hecker and what I find most exciting is that it can feel disturbing, upsetting, relaxing, angry and melancholic all at the same time.”
Floating Points – Falaise
“Another incredible example of the beauty of combining organic sounds and artificial processing. I overlooked the use of tremolo effects for years and now I don’t want to miss it anymore.”
clear eyes – until i touch the ground
“This song combines everything I love and have already described in the other songs: Textures, production, organic elements, complex drums – what a beauty.”
