French/Dutch collaboration project Douze and Lo Galbo have announced details of a concept album, Dawn, an original motion picture soundtrack to an 80s movie that doesn’t exist.
The retro-themed soundtrack, which features tracks specific to different ‘scenes’, was written almost entirely on original 80s analogue hardware, including a Linn Drum drum machine, Moog Minimoog, Roland Juno-60, Oberheim OB-Xa, Sequential Circuits Prophet-5, and the Roland SH-2.
To add to the authenticity, drums were sampled on a Akai X-7000 sampler, while a Tascam Porta One 4-track cassette recorder was even used for some takes.
Dawn also comes with a suitably-themed album sleeve – reminiscent of the vinyl for Giorgio Moroder‘s soundtrack for Midnight Express.
In Dawn, the imagined plot revolves around a teenager whose senior year is disrupted by the arrival of a mysterious new classmate. Across 16 tracks, the music reflects pivotal moments in the life of Dawn, the protagonist, as she navigates the excitement and turbulence of adolescence.
As the movie blurb puts it, ‘Spring 1984. Senior year for Dawn, a Michigan teenager, promised a bright future. But Chris, the new cool kid in town is about to upset all of her plans. Is Dawn about to blossom?’
L.O.V.E. Ltd label boss Douze, known for his work with producers like Kris Menace and Alan Braxe, has released on labels such as Work It Baby, Discotexas, Animal Language, Computer Science, NRW, Toolroom and more. Lo Galbo is one of many alter-egos from the producer co-responsible for underground French touch hit Searching by WebQueawry and The Music We Play by We Play. The pair first met in 2008, and have collaborated before on We Got The Love on Hed Kandi, as well as the Drums Allowed project, before starting work on Dawn.
Dawn is available via Bandcamp on 27 November, and more information can be found here.
